  • Forget about Internet Explorer 6

    Posted by agrublev in Angel Grablev

    imageIn recent days i have been talking to a lot of web developers about the issue of ie6, let’s face it we hate it. Now here is the good news, a lot of talented developers have taken the initiative to make little suggestions to their ie6 crowd of updating their browser. But the best part is that google offers a js fix that will pretty much kill 99% of the main frustrations you will notice when developing for ie6… so post this in your head <!--[if lt IE 7]>
    <script src="http://ie7-js.googlecode.com/svn/version/2.0(beta3)/IE7.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
    <![endif]-->
    and forget about your ie6 headaches!!!!

  • Changes in windows 7 you cannot miss

    First of all let’s just say i am addicted to the functionality of the bottom bar where the Start button is. First of all no it’s not just a little prettier like vista. In fact the second you minimize anything you will be pleasntly delighted to find out that there is a lack of unfortunate little windows taking place on the bottom of your screen, rather there is one big icon(a little like the mac dock ill admit) that you can hover above and will see the rest of the screens that belong under that category of applications. Here are a couple of screenshots to help.imageAs you can see i have hovered over the image of firefox logo and it shows me the two windows i have open. This captures the idea of the macs doc where you only need visual icon to relate to an item, but makes it a lot better by saving space and not requiring extra icons in your bottom bar for additional open windows of the same applications, bravo windows bravo!
    Other improvements i have noticed as of now, paint actually is VERY usable now, it has the Windows 2007 layout which really helps doing some simple stuff as taking snapshots and posting in your blog… like now smile
    image

    Edit: Gizmodo talks about the amazing new functionality of the taskbar which totally owns the mac dock smile http://i.gizmodo.com/5131933/giz-explains-why-the-windows-7-taskbar-beats-mac-os-xs-dock

  • Vista out Windows 7 WAY IN

    It’s almost 1am, i recieved the news of a new windows beta out… well kind of… about 2 hours ago and right now i am writing from inside of the beta 1 windows 7 build 7000, it is gorgeous. It is very pretty BUT very functional. Everything works, and it works well. I have no words to explain how this is going to put macs down once and for all, and especially with the new functionality, the tray bar is 10 times better than the dock could ever be! Thanks Microsoft for really deciding to come out with something this good. Real excited to keep being delighted with this windows.

  • Sick again

    Im not sure how the other bloggers do their blogs so often and so persistent, do they really never get sick, or do they have multiple bloggers in their staff… well i don’t know but i was really sick for a couple of days and even the thought of having to sit down on a computer and write tutorials and so on would have made me throw up, literally. Any who, i am back on track, and i will be suplying you with more fun stuff.

  • The basics of starting a website from scratch.

    Posted by agrublev in Angel Grablev

    First of all there are a great many sources if photoshop templates for starting to design a website, i will be using one of them in my fzilla designing tutorial (coming soon) which i found here. You can find a good one at 960.gs but instead of making a huge list of good ones just try the ones i listed, and if you want more wait until fzilla.com comes out and you will be able to post ones you find online smile yay.

    Once you design the website, hopefully with some help from the tips i will talk about when i make the fzilla design tutorial, you will need to start coding it down to html/css which can be fun and frustrating at the same time. To help with the frustration i found a great website that will help you start off. Check out deploy it will let you create a good starting point when it comes down to html, css, and javascript. You select the type of html you wanna write, and whether you want to include css and js in it, which you should, and then you download a premade folder that has it all which is simply awesome wink.

    And then you use some voodoo to combine your design the css the javascript and all that comes in between and you have yourself a great base!!!! Soon to come tutorials on setting up expressionengine and basics of web design and development. Thanks for staying a loyal reader raspberry

  • Some bad news

    Ok so the original plan was that we come up to san francisco, and i drop my girlfriend with her aunt and cousins while i go to a coffee shop and write tutorials and cool web blog posts… but as you know what we plan isn’t necessarily what happens. What really happened is, we drove up here super tired after a 6hour drive, went to bed super tired. Then woke up, drove halfway cross san francisco and my gf remember that she forgot her cell so we had to drive back, not me being as smart as i am i decided to tell my gps that i do NOT want to take the toll roads which ended up adding a 100miles to our drive back smile yay. Then she found her phone and her aunt told her that they arent going to be in today, so we went to her uncle instead, great guy great times but i didnt get to blog obviously. So now i am sitting here feeling like i let you guys down, sorry. Tomorrow i get to drop her off and maybe blog but i think i would much rather want to enjoy my break and spend some quality time with the great family that hosted us in san fran. Anyways the conclusion of this boring post is that i may not be able to put in as many tutorials as i expected this weekend, not meaning that i am stopping to blog AT ALL, just meaning im gonna enjoy my time a little more and blog when i can. Sorry to bore you with details of my life i know thats not while you are here. Let’s see if i can write a quick blog post tonight to make up for everything smile

  • New thoughts on fzilla.com

    So initially i thought i wanted to make it a website where people can post what apps they use to get their work done, now i’m not sure if you understood me as i intended, but i was talking about software applications… now i am completely reconsidering the word applications… i mean doesn’t Pandora(online music radio station that let’s you play music you chose) count as an application, i mean you use it, it helps me develop, and it is to a certain definition an application. All this means is that the niche will be broader. Definitely liking how this project is shaping up. Especially since this whole thing started as a simple tutorial website, it may actually benefit people smile even if i solely upload my HUGE list of applications that i like to use, if you didn’t know some of those applications existed that is all i could ask for!

    Great, well i guess i should continue working hard on the design, and planning out the parts of the website smile a lot of expression engine tutorials coming up.

    Edit: I wonder if i should wait until expression engine 2.0 comes out to make the tutorials, because then they would be more current :( true shame, gonna have to figure this out soon

  • What type of author am i as a blogger…

    Dec18

    Posted by agrublev in Angel Grablev

    I found this cool website called Typealyzer, check out what they said about me:

    The analysis indicates that the author of http://angel.grablev.com is of the type:
    ESTP - The Doers
    [ESTP]
    The active and play-ful type. They are especially attuned to people and things around them and often full of energy, talking, joking and engaging in physical out-door activities.

    The Doers are happiest with action-filled work which craves their full attention and focus. They might be very impulsive and more keen on starting something new than following it through. They might have a problem with sitting still or remaining inactive for any period of time.

  • Collection of online CSS tools to help you be a better Developer

    Dec17

    Posted by agrublev in Angel Grablev

    imageI have been gathering a collection of great tools you can use online to help you write some cleaner more readable CSS code. Here is the list:

    Online CSS Optimizer/Optimiser is a web tool for reducing the file size of cascading style sheets. In order to save more space optimized files would be messy even so you may output it as a file. Non-valid or hacked (for certain browsers) CSS files may result in error.
    CleanCSS is a great tool to clean up the css by removing only things you want. It will indent the code any way you like.
    CSSDrive offers a compressor that will minify your code for faster page loading.
    W3C CSS Validator let’s just say this is a must do for beginning web developers, check your code, it will make sure you are coding right!

    Please comment with any better/new services you have found online for css editing. Thanks

  • Designing the fzilla logo - video tutorial

    Dec17

    Posted by agrublev in Angel Grablev

    First of all i would like to say this is my first video tutorial ever, so if it’s not perfect i have learned quite a bit about making video tutorials and the next ones will be much better i promise.

    Just so you know this is a simple logo and there wasn’t much planning that went into the design, expect bigger tutorials on designing Logo Identity in the near future. For now i decided to go with a simple clean 2.0 logo.

    Making the fzilla logo - tutorial on making 2.0 logo from Angel Grablev on Vimeo.
    Simple explanation of the video above:

    • Use a 500x500 template in photoshop, which is what i usually use for logos for websites
    • Create a huge fzilla text layer using one of the BEST fonts in the world Myriad Pro
    • Get the letter spacing just right so it looks nice
    • Create a nice soothing blue gradient
    • Create a glare effect by using the pen tool

  • CSS Color Edit - Tool

    Dec17

    Posted by agrublev in Angel Grablev

    I just found a nifty tool called CSSColorEdit that allows you to import a stylesheet, and then edit all the main colors of the stylesheet. This could definitely help you renew some of your website by simply editing a couple colors on the go.

  • CSS Sprites - Why and How To

    Dec16

    Posted by agrublev in Angel Grablev

    A quick introduction to CSS Sprites: A while back the idea become popular to use a css hover technique to animate the over effect on buttons by using the same image while moving it aside to see the other part of the image creating the effect that you are viewing a whole new image and a hover state. Over time it became apparent that it may be a good idea to use only one image for a whole website thus requiring someone to load an image only once and then the rest of the websites graphic would basically be instant because you already have loaded the graphic. One of the problems with this technique is that everytime you want to add a graphic you have to go ahead and add it to the main image and then remember the coordinates of the image. For example if you wanted to display a graphic that is towards the bottom right of the image you need code like this Specify the background image at the top like so: <style type="text/css"> div.image { background: url('image.png'); </style>
    And then specify the coordinates of the desired graphic like so: <div class="image" style="background-position: -56px -504px; width: 112px; height: 112px">&nbsp;</div>
    as you see you need to specify the height and width of the image, and also the exact position, this as you may have guessed may get a little bit annoying so there are a couple of tools i found that do the job for you:

    csssprites.com
    WebsitePerformance SpriteGenerator (i do have to note that i had some problems using this one)

  • XHTML to CSS generator

    Dec16

    Posted by agrublev in Angel Grablev

    I found the CSSGenerator a while back but i haven’t had much use for it because of my high standards of customizing code (my messy code that i love so much). But i think it’s a tool anyone should try and if you like it then you should definitely use it smile It does conversion like:
    <div id="wrap">
    <div class="insideTop">
    Stuff
    </div>
    </div>

    Into
    #wrap { }
    #wrap div.insideTop{ }

    Which is a really organized way of coding css smile You should give it a go and see if it’s for you!

  • Ultimate Collection of Amazing Free Fonts - Holiday Present

    Dec16

    Posted by agrublev in Angel Grablev

    There is a wide variety of fonts, let’s just say that at one point i had about 16,000 fonts on my system, yes that’s sixteen thousand fonts. First of all let me just let you know that having that many fonts inside of your Windows/Fonts folder means a way slower start-up which always bothered me until i learned that the reason was all the silly fonts. What’s the next bad thing about having that many fonts, YOU CANNOT GO THROUGH all of them… sorry you just can’t(or if you do, you won’t be able to tell a good font from a bad font). So after reading a few design books and online blog posts on typography i found out that real designers or at least ones that are worth their bread use about 10-20 fonts at any one time… wait what??? Yes 10-20 good fonts in their arsenal. So today i will open your eyes to some good fonts, and you can chose your own 10-20 fonts that you will use for logos and website titles from here on out smile.
