    I recently got approached by the coolest company that has created the most mindblowing iPhone app and internet idea i have heard of in a while. The website allows you to use Java and access your own virtual computer from anywhere. Imagine what GoToMyPC does… but imagine not having to have your own computer at the other end but rather let them host a virtual linux based machine for you. It’s hard to explain but the idea rocks, they have as of recent created an iphone app that allows you to access your virtual computer from your iphone. Anyways enough talk, check it out AlwaysOnPc.com i designed it wink

  • Two lessons of the day

    Jan30

    Posted by agrublev in Angel Grablev

    First im going to start with something more web development related. About 4 months ago I decided to use my local bank as my main banking option. Now that is all well and dandy, but i gotta say their website has been making me feel bad about the internet every time i visit it. Have a look:
    image

    And the second lesson is about my recent ebay experience. I purchased these UGG shoes for my girlfriend, and when they arrived a few days later my dear Sia told me they are fake. So here i am with a pair of fake UGGs that i spent over 100 dollars for. I call paypal they tell me that they will open a dispute case and that i most likely will not have to ship the shoes back to china which will cost over 30 dollars. A few days pass and i call them to check, they tell me i have to ship them to china, so i talk to the “agent” and he says he has a friend in claims that will be able to make it so i don’t have to ship the shoes and he will email me when its done. Four days pass and no email from my dear agent Brandon, so today i call and i get this nice sounding lady who tells me “you have to ship the item back if your want your money” after i explain to her 2 agents have already told me i do not have to. So i ask her to talk to a manager to which she replaies “Ok, but just so you know he will say the same thing.” usually if i knew i don’t deserve what i am asking for i would consider to quit and pay, but in this occasion i knew my rights, i wasnt going to spend 30 dollars or more on boots that cost 10 dollars in san francisco in china town. So i talked to the manager who at first agreed with his colleague, but then when i mentioned the shoes are counterfeit he said hold on a minute, after about 9 minutes sitting in front of my pond he returns and tells me my money has been returned and i am all ready to go. Thanks PayPal you show me there is a god raspberry

    Why did i tell you the story above, stick up for yourself, and always talk to a manager if your point is not getting across.

  • Creating a Legend for your Grid or Graph

    Jan27

    Posted by agrublev in Angel Grablev

    image
    I am not proffesional at making those cool looking legends for your grids. But i had to do it recently at work. I had the choice to go online and find a ready made one, but where is the fun in that. I am going to show you how i did it so you can follow along wink

    First lets get the html markup out of the way:

       1:  <div class="legend”>
       2:      <span>Titlespan> C - Create<br /> D - Delete<br /> A - Angel

       3:  div>

    simple enough, you can use any different type of tags, i like those so i’ll use them.

    Now lets start styling with some css:

       1:  div.legend
       2:          {

       3:              /* first i want it to be 20% of the surrounding div, change this according to the sizing of your page */
       4:              width: 20%;

       5:              /* align the text inside to center so it’s more appealing */
       6:              text-align: center;

       7:              /* now we need the border that will surround the div */
       8:              border: 1px solid gray;

       9:              /* position this relatively so we can position our title absolutely */
      10:              position:relative;

      11:              /* add a little padding on top so the title doesn’t cut it off */
      12:              padding-top:8px;

      13:          }

    Lets see how that looks smile
    image

    Well that is looking well, now let’s position our title.

       1:  .legend span
       2:          {

       3:              /* position this absoute so it can be directly at the top left of our image */
       4:              position:absolute;

       5:              /* since it’s absolute we control position with top and left properties */
       6:              left:10px;

       7:              top:-10px;
       8: /* give it a little space on the sides, when you only specify the first two then you want then to repeat so this really means 0 2px 0 2px */

       9:              padding:0 2px;
      10: /* just so this span holds its own wink */

      11:              display:block;
      12: /* very important to use white background so that it erases the broder of the encapsulating div */

      13:              background-color:#fff;
      14: /* any decorations you want to put on the title go here */

      15:              font-weight:bold;
      16:          }

    image

    Well that looks just great in my browsers smile let me know if you have any suggestions.

  • Internet Explorer 8 RC1 released Today

    Jan26

    Posted by agrublev in Angel Grablev

    Well as you may have guessed from the title today Microsoft officially released IE8 RC1. What does that mean… well it’s a bit better than the beta’s they have been releasing until now. How do I know, I am writing this post from IE8 RC1. Btw if you are like me and at one point did not know what RC stood for, it stands for Release Candidate. I like some things in IE8, but I will never use it as my main browser. Why? Well simply because the add-ons for Firefox are priceless, and until the day comes when IE supports those add-ons and has them working as well as they do on Firefox I’ll stick with Firefox thank you very much. Now I must say Chrome isn’t doing too badly these days. I hear good things, although I don’t use it as much as people I am surrounded by. Anyhow, another rumor says that European computer manufacturers are requesting that Microsoft stops embedding IE in the operating system, because they do not see it fit as a default browser.

    Do you use IE? Switch today please smile

    Edit: 5 minutes into using ie8 i got my first pop-up, back to ff i go smile

  • Interview with Jason Putorti

    Jan14

    Posted by agrublev in Angel Grablev

    A year or so ago i asked Jason(designer of the amazing mint.com) some questions, and i decided to post up the interview here smile enjoy

    > 1. What other projects have you been involved in, or is Mint your first big piece of work.

    started a design agency out of college, Novaurora, and built websites, print campaigns, logos, and a host of other work for clients in Pittsburgh, PA. After three years I decided to see what I could accomplish in Silicon Valley. Mint is my first web software product and my first overall effort at product design.

    > 2. How did you get into Web Design, and what are some suggestions for starting out designers.

    I became very interested in computers when I was young, then the Internet, and the web. I am 100% self-taught in web design and development. I always tell students that the formal education is not important, it’s about being hungry and being a self-starter. Through books and of course the web, you can learn a great deal. As for the subject matter, learning about the tools is not as important as the fundamentals of visual communication and branding. Learn what to say and how to say it, then learn the tools as you need them. That’s the problem with a lot of formal design education.

    > 3. What would you say motivates or inspires you the most.

    I like to create things and see the fruits of my labor. Whether it is a company as an entrepreneur or a piece of design.

    > 4. What are your primary choices of tools when you’re on a project? (ex. PhotoShop, DreamWeaver or Aptana, etc.)

    I use Photoshop and Illustrator CS3 to create the design work, and I switch between Coda, CSSedit, and Textmate for the development. I prefer the Mac Pro with OS X.
